After many years it appears as though the X-Fi XtremeMusic and Ubuntu play nicely together. However, you will need to make a few slight modifications if you want to use a 3.5mm mic plugged into it with Ubuntu.
1. Open Terminal, type alsamixer, and press enter.
2. alsamixer will open in the terminal. Use your arrow keys to move over to "Digit-IO". Press the "M" key and you should hear sound from your mic. Now arrow left to "Mic" and hold the down arrow key until the levels go to 0.
3. Press F4 and make sure only the "Mic" column has the red Capture text under it. If other ones do, press the space bar to unselect them. Arrow over to PCM and hold the down arrow key to set the levels to 0.
Now your microphone should work with any program for voice communication without hearing yourself in the headset. If it still isn't working, mess around with the playback screen of alsamixer (press F4).

Fonts blurry
If you have sudden problems with blurry fonts in applications, go to Control Panel -> in search box type Fonts; click Fonts and then set your View to "Details". Right click on that tab and select "Date Modified". Now filter the dates so that the last ones to be installed are shown.
Chances are, you have a few that have been installed in the last two weeks. Highlight those and select "Delete".
Now, reboot and see if the problem has been fixed.

Windows 7 using too much memory
I have encountered problems with Windows 7 using too much memory, but a reboot fixes the problem. This can be the result of a faulty driver. I think that, specifically, Comodo System Cleaner
was causing a memory issue. This may be resolved in newer versions of the program, so update it first and see if the problem persists. If it does persist, uninstall it and test again.
You can also go to your Device Manager and select View -> Show hidden devices. Expand "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" and uninstall any drivers that you think are unnecessary. Usually, third-party drivers are spelled in lowercase. If you don't know what a certain one is, google its name, and you should be able to find out.

Fix .torrent file associations
When I tried to get a BF2 Mod with .torrent I found that I could not force it to open in uTorrent. If you have this problem please read on.
Step 1: Press and hold the windows key on your keyboard, then press the R key. Type regedit in the box and press enter. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and delete .torrent and uTorrent (if you were running any other torrent clients delete the key in here as well). Exit out of regedit.
Step 2: Right click your torrent file and make it open with wordpad.
Step 3: Double click the torrent file and make sure it's opening in wordpad.
Step 4: Right click on the Desktop and go to New -> Text Document. Open the text document and copy and paste this into it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.torrent]
@="uTorrent"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.torrent\OpenWithProgids]
"uTorrent"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\uTorrent]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\uTorrent\shell]
@="open"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\uTorrent\shell\open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\uTorrent\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\uTorrent\\uTorrent.exe\" \"%1\""
Step 6: Exit out of notepad and rename "New Text Document.txt" to "fix.reg".
Step 7: Find a torrent file, right click it, and make it open with uTorrent again. (The uTorrent executable is located in "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent".
Step 8: Double click the torrent file and see if it properly opens in uTorrent.
You can also do this with any other association. For instance if you wanted to make the default program for a .wav file VLC, do this:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\shell]
@="open"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\shell\open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe\" \"%1\""

Windows Vista extensions "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" does not work
Open regedit (press Windows key and hold down, then press the R key, type regedit and press enter). Now expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and find the file extension you are having trouble with. For instance if the file extension was .abc scroll down to .abc in regedit. Select the extension and delete it. Now right click on the offending file and click either "Open", "Open With... -> Choose Default Program" or "Open With..." now find the proper program and make sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is selected. Now double click the program that you want to open with and it should then work.
I have also traced this down to the EA Download Manager...if I am correct this messes with file associations and can have the capability of corrupting them.

Battlefield 2 login problems Battlefield 2 login slow slow login Battlefield 2
In Battlefield 2 go to Multiplayer -> Favorites. Delete all the favorites in there except the ones you want. Boom. Login is way faster.
The reason it does this is that every time you login the favorites refresh...this obviously takes precious seconds from the login time. By the way the favorites are bugged in Battlefield 2 anyway.

computer will not go into S3 standby Windows Vista
Click start button -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options -> and change to Power Saver. If you do not want to have the computer go to sleep after a certain amount of time you can change the options for the plan. This seems to be related to PCI Link state management or USB selective suspend, I'm not sure at this time. If you have found out the specific setting that causes the computer to not go into S3 please comment it on this post.

X-Fi Ubuntu 8.04 Driver Install
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4823915&postcount=675 Follow that guide, but install Ubuntu 64 bit and DO NOT install important security updates. For some reason I can't compile the kernel if I install the updates. This is probably related to the new kernel that is installed.

Windows Vista Windows XP Dual Boot Ubuntu 8.04 Tri boot partitioning
If you have Windows Vista and Windows XP already installed and have more than 4 GB of free unallocated space just boot Ubuntu 8.04 and select "Guided - use the largest continuous free space". It takes your unallocated space and puts Ubtuntu on it without affecting your Windows installations. They boot right up.

Combat Arms crash after round end
Combat Arms crashs after map load or after a certain repeatable function. Fix: Turn off Mumble Overlay. If that does not work turn off any program that uses directx rendering, e.g. Steam, Mumble, Xfire, etc. Thanks to Snipes for the solution. Also, if you are using Xfire voice chat and playing Combat Arms, this could also trigger the bug. Seems to be triggered by Combat Arms' change from one part of the program to the other when the screen goes black after the round ends to go back to the menu. Most games to not do this and apparently there is some sort of rendering break that causes other programs to interfere with the process and make Combat Arms crash.

Delete C:\Users\Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame or equivalent. Make sure you remember your login info though! You can try deleting everything but SaveData from the UTGame folder and see if it solves the crash also. The SaveData folder has your profile file in it.

Why this blog is here
I fix many computer problems and sometimes the answer is very hard to find. In this blog I will post problems that were very hard for me to solve, but I finally found the answer for. This is not a personal blog, and if you have a variation on the fixed problem depending on your computer's hardware/software please post a comment on the fix. Please do not post comments unless you think it will be useful in helping others. The problem fixes are in the order I find them, and the sole purpose of them is to help fellow googler's find the answer to their problem as quickly as possible.
